A visualization of SF award finalists/nominees/shortlisted works and the
number of ratings they have on Goodreads.
Hover over the book dots or year range bars for more information about that
year's finalists. Background on these charts can be found
here.
Credits
This report/site has no affiliation with ISFDB or Goodreads beyond (a)
using their data as described above, and (b) me being an end-user of
their sites (see
here and
here).
I am not affiliated with any award, publisher, author, etc either.
Notes
-
The year is the year an award was presented, not the year a book was
published (which is usually the preceding year, but not always e.g. Retro
Hugos).
-
Apologies to those using smaller screens, but this chart is (currently)
designed for use on a 1920x1080 or higher resolution display.
-
Red dots are award winners, grey dots are runners-up. Dots can be clicked
on to visit the Goodreads page for that book. The thin horizontal 'notch'
lines indicate the mean average number of ratings for that year.
-
Rating counts (vertical axis) are shown on a
logarithmic scale.
This is because most SF&F awards for novels have some books with rating
counts in the millions, and some counts under a hundred.
-
There may be incorrect counts where the "wrong" edition of a book has
been picked up e.g. an
omnibus
edition rather than the regular novel. Please
tweet me
if you think you've spotted such an error. (Clicking on the dot or on the
book name below will go through to the Goodreads page for the edition being
used, which might help explain why incorrect data is shown.)
-
Stats for books that don't have an
ISBN
will not be displayed, as the
Goodreads API
requires that when requesting stats, even if the book is
showing these details via the website or app. Books with no ISBN are
indicated by squares below the chart.
-
Some awards/years may lack details for all finalists. If you know the
missing details, please contribute them to
ISFDB, so that
they can be picked up by future versions of this chart, and of course
users of ISFDB itself.
