Charts showing International award finalists and their rating counts on Goodreads
Commentary
Sorry, this is really buggy at the moment, so please ignore except for noting
the fact that I am aware of these issues, and I do intend to fix them at some
point. Known issues are:
Some books don't have their ISBNs picked up, and thus we don't get their
Goodreads ratings. I think this is due in part to some code that
currently prefers English-language releases, although that wouldn't explain
why the Australian Ditmar Award suffers this problem.
Non-Roman character titles display as HTML entity codes. This is partly
down to issues I had with XML (needed due to SVG) being more pedantic about
encoding than HTML.
Non-Roman titles are shown when the original and/or English language title
would (probably) be preferable for most people who are likely to read this.
The Seiun Best Translated Long Story chart has been removed in the 2020
release of these charts, due to weird display glitches that I'm yet to
track down. (I belatedly noticed these issues were present in the original
2019 release of these charts.)
Ditmar Award / Australian Science Fiction Achievement Award - Best International Long Fiction
It's not clear to me whether the 1979 nomination for "The Persistence of
Vision" is for
the collection of that
name
(aka In the Hall of the Martian Kings, which is the title
SFADB list it under)
or the novella of
that name. ISFDB have it
attributed
to the latter, but I've put in an override to use the former instead.
This
may mean this work is undercounted, as the novella appears in numerous
subsequent collections and anthologies. (This sort of thing is a prime
example of why I've avoided doing charts
on novella categories.
R. A. Lafferty's "Continued on Next Rock" in 1972 is a novelette (and was
nominated as such for the Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards), so I'm a bit
perplexed what it's doing here in a "Long Fiction" category. Again, because
it wasn't published as a novel in its own right - but has appeared in
dozens of different anthologies and collections - any counts from Goodreads
are pretty meaningless.
"Down to a Sunless Sea" in 1976 is also a novelette.
"Stardance II" in 1979 is -
per ISFDB -
"a series not a Novel: which, along with the Novella Stardance, forms most
of the Novel Stardance", so the chart has been tweaked to show the
rating count for the latter.
Kurd-Laßwitz-Preis - Bester ausländischer SF-Roman / Bestes ausländisches Werk
Several of the nominees in this category are for series rather than individual
novels, and so can't be mapped properly onto books in Goodreads. A slightly
guilty confession is that this is pretty much the same scenario as when the
entirity of The Wheel of Time was nominated for the Hugos, and in that case
I set up a hack to just use the first book in the series, which I haven't
(yet) bothered to do for this award, mainly given that there are many more
entries I'd need to configure the manual overrides for.
